The photos shown on this page were taken during the Susan G. Komen 3-Day
Walk for Breast Cancer in August of 2004. This walk was very special to me
in so many ways.
It was the first walk that I participated in with Monica. It turned
out to be the most memorable as we had the fortune of being photographed by
Paula Lerner, who was putting together a photo documentary with Deb Murphy.
That project resulted in book called "Why We Walk." The book is still available
at many brick and mortar book stores and most online book stores.
The photos that you see here are a small sample of the photos that Paula
captured as Monica and I walked the route to Washington. I chose to provide to
you the pictures that I felt best captured our trek that weekend.
This walk was the inaugural appearance of my alter ego "Mohawkman." It would
also be the last walk that Monica was able to complete.
This walk changed my life forever. Not only did it bring me closer to Monica,
it set the framework for the walks that I would do in the future. I learned
some very valuable lessons that weekend. I learned that Monica deserved not
only a supporting husband at home. She needed a man who would step up to the
plate and support her when the pain was at its worst. The embraces that you
see here were expressions of raw emotion. Nothing was staged in those shots.
The love we shared together that weekend carried us to the end of her life. It
also set in motion my passion to continue walking no matter the outcome.
