Washington, DC - August 2006 I look back at these clips today and wonder just how this woman, so full of life and happiness, could have been taken away from me and my boys. I eight clips that I have chosen for this page all have very special memories. Clip 1 (entitled Avon2006_Kickoff ) features a volunteer getting all of the walkers pumped up for the walk. Like Monica, this youg lady had a way of bringing getting people motivated. And she did with that awesome smile. Clip 2 (entitled Avon2006_Start ) shows the mass of people who began the 2006 walk. It was a chilly but dry day. I captured just a short amount of the energy that the crowd shows at the start of one of these walks. Clip 3 (entitled MonicaMeetsCowguy ) show Monica and our dear friend Seth Jason (aka Cowguy) meet after almost two years. Seth recognized Monica from the 2004 Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk in 2004. Little did we know how close that we would become in the months and years to follow. To capture this moment on film was a blessing from above. Clip 4 (entitled HillFromHell) was taken on the hill that passes Sibley Memorial Hospital in Bethesda, MD. Veteran walkers know it as the toughest stretch of the Washington DC walking course. For Monica and I, (and the rest of the 3000+ walkers) that hill seemed to go no place but higher. This hill would come back to our future on the 2007 Washington Walk, as this very hill was the last stretch of road that Monica and I walked as a couple during an Avon event. Clip 5 (entitled MonicaLori ) was another miracle on film. This clip features Monica walking with fellow "Mets Girl" Lori Spencer. Tragically, Lori succumbed to this bastard demon in March or April of 2008. Clip 6 (entitled JustAroundTheCorner ) captured Monica in her "walking groove." For so many of us who have done a walk the phrase "Just around the corner" is synonymous with "Will this pain ever end?" In a sense, this clip also hits home with regard to whether or not they will ever find a cure. They tell us it's just around the corner, but the end is nowhere in sight. Perhaps someday the "lies" will finally stop. Clip 7 (entitled BitterIrony ) found Monica and I at the half way point of the 2006 Walk. Monica's body couldn't take any more stress. She took the sweep bus to Wellness Village here and I continued on to finish the Day 1 26 miles. The irony of this clip? The ambulance that I joke about at the end was the very ambulance that Monica and I rode to Georgetown Emergency that night where she was treated for severe dehydration and treatment-releated anemia. Clip 8 (entitled InHerElement ) captures Monica at Closing Ceremonies. Even though Monica spent the early morning hours in Gerogetown Emergency, she gathered enough energy to return to DC to attend closing ceremonies. This was Monica's nature. She would never let anyone see any weakness in her spirit. She was going to attend closing if she had to be wheeled there. In this clip, Monica wipes a tear from her face. Monica was indeed in her element. She needed to show the entire world that her place on this planet was to be there for the other survivors. She was a true leader in so many, many ways.
